The company is planning to connect 5 continents underwater through cables as part of the Waterworth project. Tech giant Meta aims to lay 50,000 kilometers of underwater cables worldwide. Meta announced that when completed, “Project Waterworth” will connect the US, India, South Africa, Brazil, and other regions, becoming the world’s longest underwater cable project. Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, aims to expand its presence in the technology field beyond social media to include artificial intelligence and supporting infrastructure. The company stated that the new cable project will provide “industry-leading connectivity” to the 5 major continents and help support artificial intelligence projects. In a blog post on the matter, Meta used the phrase, “This project will enable more economic cooperation in these regions, facilitate digital inclusion, and open up opportunities for technological advancement.” Submarine cables are becoming increasingly important as they provide power to various digital services and enable rapid data transfers worldwide.
