Mezgit and Horse Mackerel Replace Anchovy

Mezgit and horse mackerel have taken the place of anchovy at fish counters. Horse mackerel and mezgit are being sold between 100 and 125 liras. At the fish counters located in the Moloz area of the Ortahisar district of Trabzon, anchovies, which are available in small quantities, are being sold for 175 liras, while horse mackerel and mezgit are priced between 100 and 125 liras. Salmon is sold at 200 liras, sea bass and bream at 300 liras, and trout at 175 to 150 liras. Fisherman Mustafa Karslı stated that as Ramadan approaches its end, this season has been very fruitful. Karslı also mentioned that the public is showing interest in various fish that are being sold at reasonable prices. He added, “Horse mackerel and mezgit are being sold between 100 and 125 liras. Horse mackerel and mezgit have now replaced bonito and anchovies.” Karslı pointed out that the fishing ban is about to end, and with the increase in angling, mezgit and horse mackerel will have a more prominent place at the counters in the coming days. Fisherman Turgay Memiş also noted that the public has shown interest in a variety of fish during Ramadan and said, “Ramadan has been great. Fish such as horse mackerel, red mullet, saurel, trout, bream, and sea bass have adorned the counters.”
