Minister Bolat: Situation is chaotic, main goal is to avoid getting punched

The trade war escalated as US President Donald Trump announced additional tariffs for 185 countries. As mutual retaliation decisions increase uncertainty in global trade, Trade Minister Ömer Bolat stated that Turkey is prepared for the developments.
Minister Bolat mentioned that Turkey is prepared for the trade wars arising from the US additional tariffs.
Bolat commented, “The situation is chaotic, it’s unclear who is punching whom, the first goal should be to avoid getting punched.” He disclosed that they are conducting comprehensive work in close contact with sectors and emphasized that the process of updating the Customs Union, which is in force between Turkey and the EU, is among their top priorities. Speaking at the EXPO Osaka 2025 Promotion Meeting in Istanbul, Minister Bolat pointed out that countries losing access to the US market may turn to the markets where Turkey exports. Bolat stated, “There will not only be disturbances in US relations but also significant developments in Europe and Asia, there will be risks we will face. There is a risk that countries unable to find opportunities in the US market will attack our markets. Therefore, we will conduct a multifaceted diplomacy.” Turkey will participate in the EXPO Osaka 2025 in Osaka, Japan, with the theme of the Golden Age of Civilizations from April 13 to October 13, showcasing Turkey to the world in a 900 square meter pavilion covering all areas from tourism to trade.
