Mix-Up at Hospital 70 Years Ago: Reunited with Sister on DNA Test Site

In the United Kingdom, a 70-year-old Susan’s DNA test revealed that her entire life was built on a mistake. She discovered that she was swapped with another baby during birth in the 1950s.

In her seventies in England, Susan learned that her assumed biological family had no genetic connection to her. This shocking truth emerged in 2019 through a DNA test she underwent to better understand her family’s roots. Susan purchased a DNA test kit to help build a family tree and uploaded her genetic information to a genetic testing company. The test not only provided her with information about her family’s past but also led to the discovery of someone she had never heard of before- her biological sister.

Upon realizing that their DNA data closely resembled each other, Susan was astonished. Initially assuming she might be adopted, Susan learned the bitter truth after her investigations.

DISCOVERY OF BABY MIX-UP AT HOSPITAL
Susan’s revelation uncovered a major error made at a hospital in the 1950s. During that time, babies were usually kept in separate rooms after birth and cared for independently of their parents, leading to Susan and another baby being accidentally swapped during birth. Following legal action, Susan was entitled to compensation from the NHS. London-based solicitor Jason Tang from Russell Cooke stated that such mistakes occurred in the healthcare system in the 1950s due to deficiencies. Separating babies after birth into different rooms, incorrect labeling, and loss of cards were factors that led to such mix-ups.

After finding her biological family, Susan experienced significant changes in her life. Meeting her new sister, their bond quickly strengthened. She remarked, “We look so alike, I even feel very close to her like a dear friend.”

However, her emotional relationship with her biological family was somewhat more challenging. Susan described her new family relationships by saying, “They are my biological relatives, but I didn’t grow up with them. So, there is no natural bond between us.” Though meeting her newly discovered relatives was difficult, Susan found her old family bonds very valuable, saying, “The true concept of parents has not changed. They are still my family,” lovingly recalling the family she grew up with.
