Most individuals who fall ill succumb to the symptoms approximately 48 hours after onset, causing concern among local doctors and global health authorities about the rapid spread of the disease. A mysterious illness that has claimed the lives of over 50 people has surfaced in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. According to an AP report, Serge Ngalebato, the medical director of Bikoro Hospital, revealed that the vast majority of those affected by the disease had passed away only two days after the onset of symptoms. As of now, a total of 419 cases have been recorded in the outbreak that began on January 21 in northwest Congo, resulting in 53 fatalities. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Africa office announced that the outbreak started in Boloko town with three children showing symptoms of hemorrhagic fever and passing away within 48 hours after consuming bat meat. In a statement made in 2022, the WHO reported a more than 60% increase in diseases transmitted from animals to humans in the past decade in Africa. The second outbreak of the disease was observed in Bomate town on February 9. Samples from 13 different cases have been sent to the National Biomedical Research Institute in the capital city of Kinshasa for analysis. Authorities continue their efforts to determine the source and mode of transmission of the disease.
