Netanyahu Unveils New “Occupation Corridor” Plan in Gaza

Israeli Prime Minister announced the creation of a “second Philadelphi Corridor” in the Gaza Strip. This could mean the separation of Rafah from the rest of Gaza. Israel is expanding its occupation of Palestinian territories. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed plans to establish a new “security corridor” in the Gaza Strip by launching a new attack to end the ceasefire. He argued that the move aimed to put pressure on Hamas. According to the evaluation of The Associated Press (AP) news agency, the new corridor mentioned by Israel to be established in Gaza could lead to Rafah city in the south being separated from the rest of the Gaza Strip. Netanyahu’s announcement came following Defense Minister Israel Katz’s announcement of expanding operations in the Gaza Strip. Netanyahu dubbed the line they wanted to establish in the Gaza Strip as the “Morrag Corridor.” Morrag takes its name from an illegal Jewish settlement that once existed between Khan Yunus and Rafah. With this statement, Netanyahu suggested that the corridor would run between Khan Yunus and Rafah, indicating that this line would be the “second Philadelphi Corridor.” The Philadelphi Corridor, also known as the “Saladin Corridor,” is located at the Gaza-Egypt border and has been under Israeli control since last May. Israel had reoccupied the Netzarim Corridor, linking the south and north of the Gaza Strip, after violating the ceasefire. In yesterday’s statement, Netanyahu said, “We are cutting off the (Gaza) Strip and increasing the pressure step by step; therefore, we are not giving up our hostages.” The Palestinian Authority, led by Mahmoud Abbas, expressed their rejection of Netanyahu’s new corridor plan as they announced that they “completely rejected” the plan. The Palestinian Authority also called on Hamas to relinquish control of Gaza. Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz had announced on Twitter that they had expanded their attacks in the Gaza Strip by breaking the ceasefire. Katz stated that by expanding the attacks since yesterday morning, they aimed to occupy more land in the Gaza Strip, increase pressure on Hamas and the people of Gaza, arguing that these areas would be included in Israel’s “security zone.” The Israeli state television KAN had reported that the army had launched ground attacks on the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip yesterday morning. The report had mentioned that after intense air strikes throughout the night, the army entered the region and initiated a ground attack for the first time after the ceasefire was broken. It was noted that Israel’s largest division, the 36th Division consisting of armored vehicles and tanks, which was deployed to the Southern Command as part of preparations to expand the occupation, had entered the south of Gaza.
