Netherlands to Provide Ukraine with a New Support Package of 3.5 Billion Euros

The Foreign Minister of the Netherlands, Caspar Veldkamp, announced that his country will provide a new support package of 3.5 billion euros to Ukraine for military and civilian purposes. Veldkamp condemned Russia, quoting Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha’s social media post regarding the air attack by the Russian army on Dobropillya. The Dutch Minister stated, “Russia’s aggression knows no bounds. More assistance is urgently needed to protect Ukraine’s people and critical infrastructure.” Veldkamp highlighted that the Netherlands will allocate an additional 3.5 billion euros for military and civilian support to Ukraine, stating that “the only way to peace is through strength.”
Surprisingly, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, committed to providing a 3.5 billion euro aid package to Ukraine following an extraordinary summit on Wednesday where EU leaders gathered to discuss concerns arising from the approach of the Donald Trump administration towards the war in Ukraine and Europe’s security. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health, Welfare, and Sport Fleur Agema, revealed to the Dutch media that Prime Minister Schoof was unaware of the 3.5 billion euro commitment to Ukraine, stating that “this commitment came as a surprise to us. We will have a serious discussion about it.” In discussions held in the Dutch Parliament on the matter, far-right leader Geert Wilders expressed that the government cannot reach an unconditional agreement on continuing the 3.5 billion euro support for Ukraine as it was not part of the coalition agreement.
During his weekly press conference yesterday, Schoof evaluated the discussions in parliament regarding the new 3.5 billion euro aid package for Ukraine as “a good meeting” and used the phrase “3.5 billion euros is valid.”
