New decision for municipal shelter expenses

Municipalities that spend excessively on animal shelters will be able to request 40% of the amount spent from the Treasury. A new decision has been made regarding the expenses incurred by municipalities on animal shelters. In the general notification of the General Directorate of Accounting published in today’s Official Gazette, the principles regarding the use of the resources that municipalities are obliged to allocate for establishing animal shelters under temporary Article 4 of the animal protection law were defined. The notification referred to the obligation of metropolitan municipalities to allocate 3% and other municipalities to allocate 5% of their annual budgets for establishing animal care centers, carrying out rehabilitation procedures, and caring for stray animals until they are adopted. It was stated that municipalities that spend more than this percentage can request 40% of the excess amount from the Treasury and the Ministry of Finance. It was noted that the amount that can be requested will not exceed 40% of these percentages in any way.
