New Era in Labels: Mentioning Which Animal the Product is Made From

Consumers will now know from which animal the goods and clothes they are purchasing are made. It will be mandatory to include this information on the labels. The Ministry of Commerce’s regulation on consumer products containing animal parts has been published in the Official Gazette. Therefore, it will now be compulsory for labels to indicate from which animal the product was obtained. Items containing animal parts such as cow, sheep, or pigskin will need to specify the source on the label and packaging. This regulation will prevent misleading consumers with terms like artificial, vegan, and synthetic leather for non-animal parts. Information will be provided in Turkish in a way that is easily visible, readable, and non-deceptive before the purchase process. The regulation will cover product groups under the ministry’s responsibility such as textiles, gloves, shoes, bags, wallets, belts, watches, jewelry, stationery, furniture, carpets, and toys that contain animal parts. The regulation will come into effect two months after its announcement. A multinational shoe brand was fined 550,000 liras by the Advertising Board, affiliated with the Ministry of Commerce, for using pigskin in their products without disclosing this information, despite labeling them as natural leather. Additionally, the Board had issued a decision to halt the said advertisement.
