New era in water bills: Polluters will pay more

The “polluter pays” system aimed at increasing water savings will come into effect on December 31, 2026. With the regulation, those who consume excess water or produce waste will receive a higher bill.
The regulation, which was previously planned to come into effect on December 31, 2024, has been postponed to December 31, 2026, as published in the Official Gazette by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. According to a report in Ekonomim, with this system, as water and waste services usage increases, the bill will rise.
Environmental Cleaning Tax, solid waste collection fee, and waste disposal fee will be collected in a single sum. In addition, those who consume excess water and produce more waste will pay a higher fee. “INCOME TO BE USED FOR WASTE AND WATER SERVICES” Ali Rıza Öner, President of the Waste Management and Waste-to-Energy Producers Association (TAYED), shared the details of the changes to be made in water bills. Öner stated that the revenue obtained by municipalities in this context can only be used for water and waste services. Additionally, he mentioned that these fees will be determined in Municipal Councils and that as the water bill increases, the additional fee will also rise.
