New research suggests ChatGPT may increase feelings of loneliness

A joint study revealed that active interaction with chatbots like ChatGPT could lead to an increase in feelings of loneliness and a decrease in socialization. Conducted collaboratively by OpenAI and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the study involved approximately a thousand participants engaging with ChatGPT through written or verbal interactions for at least five minutes daily over a month. The results indicated that users who tend to be emotionally attached and highly trustful of the chatbot were more likely to report heightened feelings of loneliness and dependency towards ChatGPT. Additionally, the study found that only a small portion of users utilized the chatbot for emotionally enriched communication. OpenAI has previously called for a ban on the use of artificial intelligence models by China’s DeepSeek in the US. The company has also introduced a neural network for generating artistic prose and is planning to incorporate the Sora video generator into ChatGPT.
