Newton’s 300-Year Prediction: The World Could End in 2060!

The famous scientist Sir Isaac Newton, who established the laws of motion and gravity, predicted the apocalypse 300 years ago based on mathematical calculations. In a letter he wrote in 1704, he foresaw the end of the world in the year 2060. So, how did Newton make this calculation? About 300 years ago, the renowned scientist Sir Isaac Newton predicted that the world would end in the year 2060. He scribbled this estimate based on mathematical calculations on a letter he wrote in 1704. Newton used Biblical prophecies and mathematical calculations to determine the doomsday date. Particularly believing in the Armageddon War, the scientist’s prediction was based on the Protestant interpretation of the Bible and the events described in the Bible. The prophesied war, which is recounted in the book’s final chapter, pits forces of good (ruled by God) against forces of evil (ruled by Earthly kings). According to the Bible, after the Armageddon War, which will be the final battle in human history, there will be no more wars on Earth. Newton interpreted time periods mentioned in sacred texts as years. He believed a 1260-year period represented a time when the Church began to degrade and “corrupt” beliefs rose. Newton assumed the commencement of this degradation was in AD 800, which coincided with the founding year of the Holy Roman Empire. Adding 1260 years to the year 800 led to the conclusion of 2060. In a letter written in 1704, he used the phrase, “This date could be later, but I see no reason to think it will be earlier.” Stephen D. Snobelen, a professor of the history of science and technology at King’s College University in Halifax, mentioned that Newton’s calculations were based on simple arithmetic rather than complex mathematics. Today, it may seem unusual for scientists to be so interested in prophecies from sacred texts. However, Snobelen emphasized that Newton was not a scientist in the modern sense but rather a natural philosopher. From the Middle Ages to the 18th century, natural philosophy included not only the study of nature but also the exploration of God’s will on nature. Throughout his life, Newton strived to discover the truth of God and did not separate science from religion in this pursuit.
