Oldest Woman Hairdresser in the World Wins Title, Enters Guinness Book of Records

In Japan, 108-year-old Hakoişi Şitsui has entered the Guinness World Records as the “oldest working female barber.” According to the news from Japan’s state television NHK, Hakoişi Şitsui, who works as a hairdresser in Tochigi prefecture at the age of 108, has won the title of “world’s oldest woman hairdresser.” Speaking at the certificate ceremony attended by neighbors and customers, Hakoişi stated that her life has been full of challenges since a young age. Hakoişi expressed her desire to continue her profession to the best of her ability, saying, “People come from far away to see me, so I want to continue my craft.” After her speech, the Japanese woman received the Guinness World Records certificate. Born in 1912 in the Nakagawa area of Tochigi, Hakoişi started her apprenticeship at a hair salon in Tokyo at the age of 14. She obtained a barber license in 1936, but the barbershop she opened with her husband was destroyed during the Second World War. Following her husband’s death in the war, Hakoişi returned to her hometown, where she ran a small shop at home and raised her two children. The official Kyodo news agency reported that the barber Hakoişi carried the torch at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games held in Japan. Despite her age, it was reported that the Japanese barber, who continues to demonstrate hair cutting skills, can only accept a limited number of customers due to knee pain.
