Onions are sold at 18-20 lira per kilo in the field: Yield and price bring smiles to farmers

The harvest of early onions has begun in Adana, one of Turkey’s most important production centers. Onions sold at 18-20 lira per kilogram in the fields brought smiles with their yield. Last year, due to hot weather, onion yields decreased, but this year, the cold weather has made onions one of the products that bring smiles to farmers. Harvesting of onions planted in 36 thousand acres across the city has started. It was stated that the current yield per acre is between 7 and 8 tons, and an average of 250 thousand tons of yield is targeted throughout the city. For early onions, agricultural workers from different regions of Turkey who came to the city started working in the fields from early hours. The workers individually uprooted the onions, filled sacks, and sealed them to make them ready for sale. The onions were counted by the onion representatives, loaded onto trucks, and sent to all parts of Turkey, especially Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, and Bursa, depending on demand.Mehmet Akın Doğan, the President of the Yüreğir Chamber of Agriculture, told Ihlas News Agency, “Early onions are sorted into 3 sizes, and workers have started harvesting. Currently, the kilogram price of early onions is between 18-20 lira. There are still about 50 thousand tons of winter onions in storage. The kilogram price of those onions ranges from 12-14 lira. We have planted more onions in Adana this year than last year. The harsh and cold weather has been good for the onions.”Dogan also mentioned that the harvest will accelerate after Ramadan Bayram. He said, “The harvest will accelerate even more after Ramadan Bayram. If our farmers continue to sell onions at these prices, they will make money. Onion harvesting has started in Adana, but fresh onions from Egypt and dry onions from Uzbekistan are entering our country. If these onions continue to come into our country, our farmers will not be able to make money. Any product other than onions that has started harvesting should not enter our country.”Furthermore, Mehmet Akın Doğan, the President of the Yüreğir Chamber of Agriculture, stated that there is an excess of onion yield, and they are expecting export permits in the coming days, which will allow them to export onions abroad.Onion producer Mehmet Kayalı also commented, “The price is making us happy. We are also getting a good yield per acre. Hopefully, no onions will be imported from abroad, and we will sell onions at these prices. We also produce potatoes, but they were damaged by frost. We are hoping for smiles on our faces from onions.”
