OpenAI Rejects Elon Musk’s Acquisition Offer

The artificial intelligence company OpenAI officially rejected a $97.4 billion acquisition offer from a group of investors led by Elon Musk. OpenAI made a statement regarding Musk’s offer decision. Bret Taylor, the Chairman of the OpenAI Board, stated that the company is not for sale and Musk’s latest attempt to disrupt the competition was unanimously rejected. Taylor emphasized that any potential reorganization of OpenAI would strengthen our non-profit organization and mission to benefit humanity with AGI. OpenAI, based in San Francisco and behind ChatGPT, which is a non-profit initiative, had started efforts to become a for-profit business. The company’s CEO, Sam Altman, characterized Musk’s offer as a tactic to slow down the process. Altman used the expression “If you want, we can buy Twitter for $9.74 billion.” Musk had announced that he was ready to abandon the acquisition attempt of OpenAI if the non-profit structure of ChatGPT was maintained. The issue of profit had sparked a dispute. Elon Musk had sued OpenAI, claiming that the organization had abandoned its mission of developing artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity without profit, alleging a breach of the company’s founding agreement. OpenAI had also released a series of emails and messages supporting Musk’s endorsement of the organization’s AI initiative as a for-profit structure back in 2017.
