Opposition Leader in Singapore Faces Accusations: False Testimony Leads to 3-Year Prison Sentence

In Singapore, a court found opposition leader Pritam Singh guilty of lying to a parliament committee.
Pritam Singh, the 48-year-old opposition leader, appeared before the judge.
Leader of the Workers’ Party Singh was found guilty twice of giving false testimony to the parliament committee in an investigation involving a party member of parliament.
While the penalty Singh will receive has yet to be determined, it is mentioned that the sentence he will face could prevent him from running in this year’s scheduled general elections.
CANNOT RUN IN ELECTIONS
Opposition leader Singh could receive a maximum of 3 years in prison and a fine of up to 7,000 Singapore dollars for each charge brought against him. According to the Singapore constitution, a person fined a minimum of 10,000 Singapore dollars (about 7,400 dollars) or sentenced to at least 1 year in prison cannot stand for elections or hold a seat in parliament for 5 years.
Member of Parliament Raeesah Khan had alleged inappropriate behavior by the police towards a sexual assault victim in 2021, but it was revealed that there was no record of such an incident in police files.
Khan, who admitted the story was not true, resigned from her position. Singh, on the other hand, claimed he was unaware that Khan had lied about the incident to the investigation committee.
