Opposition leader Jae-Myung’s sentence overturned in South Korea

The 1-year prison sentence received by South Korea’s opposition leader Lee Jae-Myung in 2022 for “false statements” has been overturned. In South Korea, the appellate court overturned the 1-year prison sentence imposed on opposition leader Lee Jae-myung for making “false statements” during his presidential campaign in 2022. According to Yonhap, the Seoul High Court heard the appeal made regarding the case in which Lee was convicted. The court rejected the conviction against the opposition leader, stating that his statements during that period could not be considered as “false statements.” Therefore, with this decision, the legal obstacle to Lee’s candidacy in the upcoming elections, which remained a member of parliament after the ruling, has been removed. Lee expressed his gratitude to the court for making a decision based on truth and justice. He stated, “I hope the prosecution now reconsiders what they have done and avoids wasting more national energy.” The leader of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP), Lee, is seen as the leading candidate in the upcoming presidential race to be held within 60 days if the Constitutional Court approves the dismissal of former President Yoon Suk-yeol. The Seoul District Court had previously found Lee guilty of making false statements by stating in a statement given in December 2021 that he did not know Kim Moon-Ki, the former director of the “scandal-ridden” urban development project associated with corruption allegations. The court had sentenced Lee to a 1-year suspended prison term for violating the Public Officials Election Act by making false statements.
