Outbreak Alarm in the US: Second Measles-Related Death in the Last 10 Years

In the United States, with one more person losing their life due to measles, the number of measles-related deaths has risen to 2. This death marks the second measles-related fatality in the country in the last decade. It was reported that this marks the first measles-related death in over 40 years in New Mexico.
In New Mexico, a person who tested positive for measles has passed away. The state health department announced that this is the second measles-related death in the country in the last 10 years.
David Morgan, the Public Information Officer for the New Mexico Health Department, stated that the deceased individual did not get vaccinated and did not seek medical help before their death.
FIRST MEASLES-RELATED DEATH IN OVER 40 YEARS IN NEW MEXICO
Morgan mentioned that this death marks the first measles-related fatality in the state in over 40 years, with the investigation into the actual cause of death ongoing.
The deceased adult patient, whose name was not disclosed, is stated to be the first measles-related death in the county as well.
159 MEASLES CASES REPORTED
US officials indicated that measles cases are rapidly spreading in West Texas, with 159 cases reported as of Tuesday. In Lea County, which is part of New Mexico, 10 cases have been identified.
Last week, a child in Texas became the first measles-related death in the US in the last decade. Experts highlight that preventing measles through the MMR vaccine is the most effective approach, with two doses of the vaccine being 97% effective.
