Outbreak of Melioidosis in Australia: 20 fatalities reported

Since the intense rainfall started in November 2024 in Australia, 20 people have lost their lives due to the melioidosis disease.

In Australia’s Queensland state, it has been reported that there have been 125 cases of melioidosis since the onset of heavy rainfall in November 2024. The number of deaths due to melioidosis across the state has reached 20 following the death of an elderly man in the northern city of Townsville. Authorities have urged the elderly and those with chronic illnesses to stay away from mud as heavy rainfall is expected to continue in Queensland.

Melioidosis is transmitted through inhaling mud particles or contact with dirty water. Prof. Dr. Paul Griffin, who works on infectious diseases at Queensland University, stated that the number of deaths caused by the outbreak is higher than expected, emphasizing the need to raise awareness among people to reduce cases and prevent further fatalities.
