Oxford University Makes History: Teleportation Not Impossible!

Scientists claim to have made a significant breakthrough in teleportation by transferring data between quantum computers. This is not the first time successful quantum teleportation has been achieved. Previously, international teams had shown how data could be transferred from one place to another via teleportation. In late 2023, scientists managed to teleport using light without physically sending the image.

Researchers at Oxford University successfully teleported the logical gates, which are fundamental components of computer algorithms, between two quantum processors located about 1.8 meters apart. By utilizing light particles (or photons), scientists could establish a shared quantum connection between two separate devices. This allowed the processors to remotely work together by sharing the same algorithm to complete computational tasks.

SCALABILITY ISSUE AND SOLUTION: This breakthrough could solve the “scalability issue” affecting the construction of usable quantum computers. Currently, a single computer capable of processing millions of qubits would need to be massive in size, making it impossible for most people to own such a system. Qubits (or quantum bits) replace the traditional bits of a standard computer. This new invention changes all of this, enabling scientists to transport data between smaller devices rather than building a single massive machine.

CHANGING THE GAME: The team stated that any powerful quantum device capable of processing millions of qubits could be a game-changing innovation in computer science. While traditional bits store and transmit data in zeros and ones, qubits use quantum physics to exist simultaneously in both states. Therefore, quantum devices may one day revolutionize the computer industry by significantly increasing processing speeds.

TELEPORTATION NOT A NOVELTY: This is not the first time scientists have successfully accomplished quantum teleportation. Previously, international teams had demonstrated how data could be moved from one place to another via teleportation without moving qubits. In late 2023, scientists even used light to teleport without physically transmitting an image. However, the Oxford team claims that this is the first instance of teleporting quantum gates (fundamental components of algorithms) over long distances.
