The commission has decided that Google must pay 16 to 27 million dollars to local news establishments over 3 to 5 years. According to Bloomberg, after a 16-month investigation, the commission prepared the Media and Digital Platforms Market Inquiry (MDPMI) report. The organization recommended that Google pay local news establishments annual amounts ranging from 300 to 500 million rand (approximately 16 to 27 million dollars). It was emphasized that this payment should continue for 3 to 5 years. According to the decision, Google’s algorithm excessively promoted global media in South Africa. Algoritms disrupted competition among media establishments as they inadequately represented local media. It was reported that these algorithms significantly harmed the country’s media. THEY LOST 11 MILLION DOLLARS Google was found to have earned 800 to 900 million rand (approximately 43 to 49 million dollars) from news content in South Africa through algorithm changes. During this process, local media establishments suffered losses of 8 to 11 million dollars. Additionally, other technology companies such as X, YouTube, TikTok, and Meta were warned to stop deprioritizing local news. Furthermore, it is expected that the final result will be reached within 4-5 months after obtaining the views of the parties as per the report.
