Pharmacists will not suffer income loss: They will benefit equally from price increases

According to the new regulation from the Ministry of Health, pharmacists will benefit equally from exchange rate increases in drug prices. The aim of the regulation is to prevent pharmacists from experiencing income loss. In a statement made by the Ministry of Health regarding the regulation published in the Official Gazette yesterday, it was mentioned that drug prices are updated annually depending on the periodic euro exchange rate changes and in accordance with the “Regulation on Pricing of Human Medicinal Products.” It was stated in the announcement that this update is based on a certain percentage of the average euro value of the previous year and that the current value is determined within the framework of budget discipline, similar to other countries. The regulation not only includes human-made products but also imported drugs. Due to the lack of annual updates in the current regulation, it was reported that pharmacy profit margins remained fixed, causing many drugs to be sold at a low profitability rate by surpassing the upper limit. The statement indicated that pharmacists’ profitability tiers were applied as 28% for first-tier drugs (up to 328 liras), 18% for second-tier drugs (328-657 lira range), and 13% for third-tier drugs (over 657 liras). The regulation published in the Official Gazette yesterday was stated to provide a significant advantage for pharmacists in the announcement, which indicated, “Pharmacists’ profitability tiers will now be redefined in each exchange rate update period. This means that the price tiers of drugs on which pharmacists base their profits will also increase equally according to the update in drug prices. Pharmacists will benefit equally from drug price increases, preventing income loss.”
