Politicians Denied Entry to Angola: 20 Individuals Arrested

More than 20 politicians, including Zanzibar’s First Vice President, were denied entry to Angola. A high-level political delegation from different countries was not allowed to enter Angola. Zanzibar’s First Vice President Othman Masoud Othman, among others, who came to attend a conference from different countries, was denied entry to Angola, while it was reported that over 20 politicians were detained. Zanzibar’s First Vice President Othman, Tanzanian ACT Wazalendo Party leader Dorothy Semu, Mozambican opposition leader Venancio Mondlane, and former Botswana President Ian Khama, among others, went to Angola to attend a conference. However, the delegation was detained by officials at the airport and their passports were confiscated. Kenyan Senator Edwin Sifuna, a member of the delegation, confirmed that he safely returned to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia after being deported. Sifuna noted that more than 20 politicians, including 9 Tanzanians, 5 Botswanans, 3 from Lesotho, 2 from Malawi, 2 British, 2 South Africans, one from Eswatini, and one German, are still in custody. The Angolan government has not made an official statement on the matter.
