Pope Francis to be discharged tomorrow

The Vatican announced that Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of Catholics and President of Vatican City, will be discharged from the hospital tomorrow after receiving treatment for respiratory issues for over a month. The 88-year-old Pope has been undergoing treatment for bilateral pneumonia caused by severe bronchitis he experienced in February at Gemelli Hospital in Rome for 37 days. Doctors Sergio Alfieri and Luigi Carbone of the Pope held a press conference at the hospital. Prof. Alfieri stated that he would be delivering good news today that everyone around the world has been waiting for, saying, “The Pope will be discharged from the hospital tomorrow. He has been in a stable condition for the past two weeks.” The Pope will return to his residence at the Santa Marta Guesthouse in the Vatican and complete his recovery process for two months. He is advised to avoid mass visits and intense physical activities during this period. The doctors revealed that the Pope, who has been receiving treatment in the hospital for over a month, has survived two life-threatening situations. Alfieri mentioned that the bilateral pneumonia diagnosis on the Pope is no longer present, but the polymicrobial infection is still ongoing, requiring more time to recover fully. Dr. Carbone shared that it is not yet certain how long it will take for the Pope to regain his ability to speak and hoped for a swift recovery. He mentioned that there is no reason to worry, but some “relapses” could occur. The doctors also emphasized that the Pope did not have Covid, he does not have diabetes, and he is an exemplary patient who follows medical advice. WILL THE POPE VISIT TURKEY? When a journalist inquired whether the Pope would visit Nicaea in Turkey at the end of May for the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea, Vatican Spokesperson Matteo Bruni responded, “This trip was never officially announced by the Vatican, and a decision will be made based on the Pope’s health condition.” As Bruni revealed this morning, Pope Francis will greet those waiting for him after the Sunday prayer at the hospital tomorrow and then be discharged to return to the Vatican as soon as possible. UNDERGOING TREATMENT SINCE FEBRUARY Pope Francis suffered from bronchitis during two public events on the 9th and 12th of February, leading to difficulty breathing and a request for his aides to read his speech. He was admitted to Gemelli Hospital on the 14th of February, where he was diagnosed with polymicrobial infection. The Vatican announced on the 18th of February that the Pope developed bilateral pneumonia and his clinical condition was complex. On the 22nd of February, there was a statement that the Pope’s condition was critical due to an asthma attack. The Vatican reported on the 28th of February that the Pope underwent bronchoaspiration due to an asthma attack, mechanical ventilation was initiated, and he responded positively to treatment. On the 3rd of March, the spiritual leader of Catholics experienced acute respiratory failure twice, and non-invasive mechanical ventilation was restarted. Since the 4th of March, the Pope has been stable and showing signs of mild improvement. The last chest x-ray taken on the 12th of March confirmed the improvements recorded in previous days radiologically. On the 16th of March, the Vatican shared a photo of Pope Francis praying in the chapel of his hospital room. This image was the first photo shared since the Pope was hospitalized.
