Price Doubled in a Week: Shares the same Counter with Anchovies

Due to weather conditions in Sakarya, fishermen were unable to go out to sea last week, causing the price of horse mackerel to double, becoming equivalent to anchovies. Horse mackerel, which found buyers last week for 100 liras, is now being sold for 200 liras, sharing the same counter with anchovies. Last week, anchovies were sold for 200 liras per kilogram on fish counters in Sakarya, giving way to horse mackerel, sold for 100 liras per kilogram due to its freshness and taste. Horse mackerel, with its affordable price, freshness, and tastiness, attracted intense demand from citizens and was almost available on every counter. However, due to weather conditions that prevented fishermen from going out to sea, its price increased by 100 percent. Accordingly, anchovies are being sold for 200 liras on counters, while horse mackerel, which found buyers for 100 liras last week, is now sold for 200 liras. Fisherman Varol Demir, stating that fish prices are suitable according to the season, said, “Prices are currently going as they should. Sometimes there might be decreases or increases in prices. This situation is quite normal due to weather conditions. If fish are abundant, the price increases; if they are scarce, the price decreases. At the moment, anchovies and horse mackerel have become a bit expensive. Other than that, there is no increase in prices. If boats do not go out to the sea, there will be no fish. This situation leads to an increase in fish prices. When boats go out to the sea too much, the prices drop. Compared to previous days, prices of anchovies and horse mackerel have slightly increased. For example, anchovies were 80-100 liras last month, now they are 200 TL. In other words, they increased by 100 TL in a month. Ramadan is approaching. Since there is less demand for fish during Ramadan, prices will rise a bit. Because boats will not go out too much, prices will increase a bit.” Hüseyin Türel, emphasizing that people of all ages should consume fish, stated, “First of all, I believe that there is not a significant increase in prices in Sakarya in general. A fish that was priced at 100 liras is now 150 liras. There is no significant change in horse mackerel either. It is quite normal to have such a reflex about prices. But they should not have this reflex for fish. I recommend consuming the natural protein source fish, from large to small sizes.”
