Following the agricultural frost disaster in Hatay, there is an increase in the price of Kapya peppers, which are now finding buyers for 80 TL. The recent frosts in Hatay had damaged the crops of farmers in the region. The producers growing Kapya peppers in greenhouses in the Toygarlı neighborhood of Defne district had incurred a 50% loss in their products. Before the frost, the price of Kapya peppers was 50 TL. The increase in price to 80 TL at the greenhouse has negatively affected consumers. Mehmet Çağtay, the headman of Toygarlı neighborhood, stated that after the agricultural frost disaster, the crops of the farmers in the region were damaged, hence the increase in the price of Kapya peppers. He said, “Our neighborhood makes a living with agriculture and animal husbandry. There was a significant damage due to the recent frost. Harvest is now taking place in greenhouses unaffected by the frost. Half of the crops in the greenhouses were affected, half were not. With the harvest of the unaffected products, there has been an increase in prices. The price of Kapya peppers is currently 80 TL, we heard they are sold for 150 TL in supermarkets in Istanbul and Ankara. There is a noticeable increase in prices after the frost. Prices seem to increase even more. Peppers were significantly affected because they are not resistant to frost.” Farmer Taha Çağatay mentioned that before the agricultural frost disaster, the price of Kapya peppers in the greenhouse was 50 TL, and after the disaster, the price increased to 80 TL. He said, “We had a 50% loss in our products due to the recent frost disaster. We are harvesting the remaining Kapya peppers. Prices have increased slightly due to the frost. There is also an increase in prices in Mersin and Adana. Kapya peppers are currently around 80 TL, whereas they were around 50 TL before the frost disaster. There is a 50% price difference.”
