Prison Sentences Coming for Traffic Offenses! Heavy Penalties for Road Blocking, Drifting, Drink Driving…

In the upcoming days, a new judicial package will be presented to the Parliament where penalties for traffic offenses will be regulated. While prison sentences will be imposed for drunk driving and road blocking, fines for drifting, weaving through traffic, and not giving way to ambulances will be increased. The Ministry of Justice is continuing its work on the new judicial package. Apart from changes in the penal enforcement system, the package will also include regulations targeting those who jeopardize the life and property safety of individuals in traffic. Penalties for those who drift, drive without a license, and drive under the influence of alcohol will be increased.
In the new judicial package, the minimum sentence for drunk driving will be raised from 3 months to 6 months. The regulation also foresees that those who drive under the influence will spend at least 36 days and up to 144 days in prison. The penalty for drunk driving will also increase from 9,267 Turkish liras to 50,000 Turkish liras. The license suspension period will also be extended from 6 months to 1 year. The penalty for driving under the influence of drugs, which is currently 47,842 Turkish liras, will rise to 100,000 Turkish liras.
The fine for drifting will increase from 46,392 Turkish liras to 80,000 Turkish liras. The license suspension period of 60 days will be extended to one year. The new package will also include penalties for weaving through traffic. The fine for this offense will be raised from 9,267 Turkish liras to 50,000 Turkish liras, and the license will be suspended for one year.
It is also expected that the penalty for driving without a license will be increased from 18,677 Turkish liras to 40,000 Turkish liras. The fine for not giving way to ambulances, fire trucks, and police vehicles will increase from 993 Turkish liras to 20,000 Turkish liras. The offense of blocking the road in traffic will be included in the Turkish Penal Code. Offenders of this crime will face 1 to 3 years in prison and a one-year license suspension penalty.
