Protest in Skopje for those who died in nightclub fire in North Macedonia

Demonstrators gathered in front of the Parliament building in Skopje to protest the nightclub fire that took place in North Macedonia. The disaster in Eastern Macedonia claimed the lives of 59 people. Following the nightclub fire in Kocani where 59 people lost their lives, another demonstration was held in the capital Skopje calling for accountability for those responsible. The protesters gathered in front of the Parliament building in response to the call by the group named “Who’s next?” demanding justice for the 59 people who lost their lives and over 170 who were injured in the nightclub fire. Expressing their anger at the inaction of the Parliament on this matter, the demonstrators unfurled a banner reading “The system is next.” Borjan Eftimov, one of the demonstrators, stated, “We demand that all documents related to the activities of the nightclub operating since 2012 are transparently and thoroughly published.” Another protester, Igor Antov, expressed the need for transparency regarding the license of the nightclub, saying, “We propose the establishment of a public service that ensures all inspections in the country are carried out transparently so that all citizens can see which facilities are subject to inspection and which are not.” Additionally, rallies were held on March 18th and March 25th in response to the nightclub fire. WHAT HAPPENED? In Kocani, located approximately 100 kilometers from the capital Skopje, a pyrotechnic material caused a fire in a nightclub on March 16th at 03:00 local time. In the fire, 59 people lost their lives and over 170 people were injured. 12 of the injured were transferred to Istanbul and Ankara for treatment on medical planes sent by Turkey. Investigations after the incident revealed that the nightclub was operating without a license, and at least 34 people, including former Economy Minister Kreshnik Bekteshi, were under investigation. The North Macedonia government declared a national mourning period of 7 days following the incident. Furthermore, the Mayor of Kocani, Ljupco Papazov, resigned in the aftermath of the incident.
