Putin: The US has serious plans for Greenland

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the US’s actions towards Greenland have historical roots, emphasizing that believing this is an exaggeration by the new US administration would be a mistake. Putin made these remarks at the International Arctic Forum held in Murmansk, Russia. Pointing out that the shipping volume through the Northern Sea Route has increased by about 9 times in the last 10 years, Putin mentioned that it is planned for 70 to 100 million tons of shipments to take place annually along this route by 2030. Putin expressed the desire to develop joint projects in the Arctic region with friendly countries and stated that the doors are open to Western nations as well. Putin highlighted that the cooperation opportunities in the Arctic have been damaged due to the confrontational attitude of Western countries towards Russia, reaffirming that Russia does not threaten anyone in the Arctic but is prepared to defend its sovereignty. Evaluating the recent steps taken by the US regarding Greenland, Putin said, “These plans have long-standing historical roots. It is clear that the US will continue to prioritize its geostrategic, military, political, and economic interests in the Arctic region systematically.” Putin also indicated that the developments are between the US and Greenland and do not concern Russia, concluding that believing this is an exaggeration by the new US administration would be a mistake. The US indeed has serious plans for Greenland.
