A record was broken with approximately 5 million declarations made in income tax. In 2024, a total of 1 trillion 370 billion liras of income was declared, with 411 billion liras of tax calculated. Those who did not declare their income were scrutinized. Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek stated that the fight against the informal economy yielded results.
The Revenue Administration Presidency of the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, through the efforts carried out last year, achieved record numbers with approximately 5 million declarations made for earnings, reaching the highest levels of declared income and tax accrued to date. According to information obtained from the Ministry, the Revenue Administration Presidency conducted significant work targeting taxpayers who earn income in various fields such as rental and wage incomes, as well as commercial, agricultural, or freelance professional earnings, as part of the fight against the informal economy. Starting from March 1, taxpayers were reminded via SMS that the declaration period for 2024 earnings had begun and that the declarations could be made electronically. Within this scope, approximately 1.7 million taxpayers who are required to declare income from rental, wage, capital gains, and other earnings, as well as approximately 2.9 million individuals earning income from commercial, agricultural, and freelance professional activities, were sent SMS messages. Reminder messages were also sent to freelance professionals such as lawyers, doctors, architects, and engineers based on the analysis results from previous years. It was emphasized that the earned income should be declared completely and accurately, notifying of penal procedures for incomplete or incorrect declarations. Taxpayers who were sent SMS messages were reminded three times during the declaration period, including the final day. Through these efforts, record levels were reached in the number of declarations made through the Ready Declaration System, as well as in the total declared income and tax accrued. 473 THOUSAND TAXPAYERS DECLARED FOR THE FIRST TIME In this context, during the declaration period from March 1 to April 7, a total of 2 million 248 thousand taxpayers who earned income from rental, wage, capital gains, and other earnings submitted declarations. These declarations amounted to 857.6 billion liras of declared income and 267.3 billion liras of tax. This represented a 24% increase in the number of declarations, with a 115% increase in declared income and a 111% increase in calculated tax compared to the previous year. This year, 473 thousand taxpayers declared for the first time, establishing their tax liability for rental, wage, capital gains, and other earnings, marking the highest number on record. Additionally, a total of 2 million 747 thousand declarations were submitted by individuals liable for income tax from commercial, agricultural, and freelance professional activities. These declarations represented a 90% increase from the previous year, with 512.9 billion liras of declared income and 143.7 billion liras of tax. Thus, a total of 4 million 995 thousand declarations were made for earnings from the previous year, reaching the highest number to date. Furthermore, the total declared income was 1 trillion 370 billion 500 million liras, with a calculated tax of 411 billion liras. CLOSE MONITORING FOR NON-DECLARERS Following the end of the declaration period, the Revenue Administration began efforts to identify taxpayers who earned income in 2024 and did not submit declarations despite being informed, as well as those who did not declare or made incomplete declarations. Information on these taxpayers will be forwarded to the tax offices for penal action. Individuals can submit declarations under the repentance provisions of the Tax Procedure Law before receiving a letter from the tax office. No penalty is imposed for tax loss when a declaration is made under repentance. Declarations can be submitted online via the Ready Declaration System and taxes can be paid using this system through bank or credit card. “FIGHTING THE INFORMAL ECONOMY YIELDED RESULTS” Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek mentioned in his statement that the fight against the informal economy had yielded results. Mehmet Şimşek, thanked taxpayers who correctly and promptly declared their income on social media, stating, “We remind those who did not declare or declared incompletely that they can benefit from the repentance provisions.”
