Birol Küle, the President of the Competition Authority, announced that they have conducted numerous investigations into the red meat sector. Küle stated, “We will impose administrative fines equivalent to 10% of the turnover on enterprises that violate competition.” Speaking about the ongoing work of the Competition Authority regarding the red meat sector, Küle highlighted the complaints and reports received about enterprises in the sector colluding to fix prices, increase prices by mutual agreement, or restrict supply. “We are carrying out simultaneous investigations into the red meat sector and we have significant findings on this matter,” Küle said. Despite their investigations, Küle warned enterprises continuing to violate the rules in the sector, stating, “Based on the authority given to us by our law, we will impose administrative fines equivalent to 10% of the turnover on enterprises that violate competition. I would also like to remind that we imposed a significant fine on a leading company in the sector in 2023.” Emphasizing their goal of ensuring that consumers have access to more affordable and higher quality products, Küle noted that the red meat sector is critical in many ways when it comes to consumer welfare. Küle stressed the importance of the red meat’s role as an essential protein source for healthy and balanced nutrition for citizens and its crucial interdependence with sectors such as livestock, feed, dairy, and retail, influencing various industries. Underlining the impact of competition in the red meat sector on consumers’ welfare, Küle urged all enterprises operating in this market to determine their prices independently and competitively, emphasizing this point persistently. As part of their commitment to address any competitive concerns affecting citizens’ welfare, Küle warned enterprises to address competition issues in this sector. He emphasized that no leniency would be shown in the face of identified violations.
