Refugee boat sank off the coast of Lesvos: 4 dead

Following the sinking of a boat carrying refugees off the coast of Lesvos Island, the lifeless bodies of two children and two women were recovered. It was announced that 23 people were rescued. Four people lost their lives as a result of the refugee boat sinking off the coast of Lesvos Island in Greece. Recovered were the lifeless bodies of four individuals, two children and two women, while the Hellenic Coast Guard announced that 23 people were saved. A Coast Guard official stated that search and rescue operations initiated after the boat sank were ongoing. The exact number of people on board during the incident remains unclear. Greece, located at the southeastern tip of the European Union (EU), is situated on the migration route of refugees coming from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia who aim to reach Europe. It is estimated that around 1 million refugees reached Greek islands in 2015. By 2024, it is believed that approximately 54,000 refugees had arrived in Greece. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) data, a significant portion of these refugees had reached Greece by sea.
