Resolution demanding Russia withdraw from Ukraine approved at UN: US voted against

The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) approved a resolution demanding the immediate withdrawal of all Russian troops from Ukraine. While the US and Russia voted against the resolution, Turkey was among the countries that voted in favor. As the 3rd year of the Ukraine-Russia War comes to a close, the UN General Assembly convened for an urgent session. During the session, a resolution prepared by Ukraine calling for “the immediate withdrawal of Russian forces to end the war,” supported by European Union (EU) countries, was put to a vote. The resolution put forward by Ukraine was approved with 93 “yes” votes against 18 “no” votes at the General Assembly. 65 countries abstained from voting. In the vote, the US and Russia cast “no” votes, while Turkey was among the countries that voted “yes.” The approved resolution highlights that the Russian occupation has continued for three years, causing “destructive and long-lasting consequences not only for Ukraine, but also for other regions and global stability.” The resolution, supported by EU countries, calls for an end to the ongoing war between the two countries and for Russia to fully withdraw from Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders. The decisions taken at the General Assembly do not have legal binding force.
