Retired Landlord Living in Rental Property Exempt from Property Tax by Public Auditing Institution

Through the initiative of the Public Auditing Institution (PAI), a retired teacher who owns a property in his name but resides as a tenant in another property has been exempt from property tax. The PAI ensured that a retired landlord living in a rental property is exempt from property tax due to the absence of additional income. As per the decision of the PAI, the retired teacher living as a tenant in a property he owns in his name, revealed that apart from his pension, he does not have any other source of income, and thus requested exemption from property tax from the municipality. Facing rejection of his request and receiving a tax payment order in July 2024, the retired individual stated that he could not leave the rental property where he has been living for many years due to habits, and appealed to the PAI for exemption from property tax considering his economic situation. The PAI assessed the application and held discussions with the relevant municipality to fulfill the applicant’s request. The municipality, in a positive response, informed the PAI that the process for the applicant’s property tax exemption had been initiated.
