Rümeysa Öztürk Decision in the USA: Federal Judge Halts Deportation Order

The decision to deport Turkish doctoral student Rümeysa Öztürk in the USA was blocked by the American judiciary. Judge Denise Casper of the Massachusetts District Court in Boston issued a halt to the deportation of Rümeysa Öztürk, who was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials in Boston. The judge ruled to suspend the decision until the court hearing is concluded. The government was given until the end of April 1st to make the necessary defense in court.

REACTION FROM CONGRESS MEMBERS
There has been criticism from American politicians regarding the detention of Rümeysa Öztürk. Around 30 members of Congress, consisting of American Senators and Representatives, wrote a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, and Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement Todd Lyons regarding the detention of Öztürk. The members of Congress demanded the release of Öztürk, stating that “the government cannot detain or deport legal residents of the country for expressing their political views.”

ÖZTÜRK DETAINED ON THE WAY TO IFTAR
Rümeysa Öztürk was detained by immigration officials on the evening of March 25th as she was leaving her home in Massachusetts to go for iftar. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused Öztürk of attempting to start a rebellion at the university.
