Russia-Ukraine peace talks | Trump: We made significant progress

US President Donald Trump stated that they have made significant progress in their talks with Russia and Ukraine over the past 2 days, saying, “Ukraine wants to make a deal because I don’t think they have other options. I also believe Russia wants to make a deal.” Trump, who will be visiting Saudi Arabia, mentioned that Saudi Arabia will invest 1 trillion dollars in their country, and that is why the visit is taking place. NATO and Gaza were also on the agenda of the US President. In an Oval Office signing ceremony, Trump discussed various foreign policy issues, ranging from Russia-Ukraine to the Middle East. Trump mentioned that talks with Russia and Ukraine are ongoing, and they have made significant progress, stating, “We have made serious progress in talks with Russia and Ukraine over the past 2 days. Ukraine wants to make a deal because I don’t think they have other options. I also believe Russia wants to make a deal.” Additionally, the US President indicated that a decision will soon be made regarding whether there will be a change in the temporary legal status of approximately 240,000 Ukrainian immigrants in the country. Trump addressed the issue of NATO payments, stating that the US has paid too much to NATO while other countries have fallen short of their spending requirements. Trump expressed, “I said if you don’t pay, we won’t defend you. I said this 7 years ago and they paid hundreds of millions of dollars. They said ‘what if we were in debt, would you defend us?’ No, I said.” Describing NATO as potentially good but criticizing the unjust payment situation within NATO, Trump maintained that some countries cover their defense expenses themselves and, as a result, accuse the US of being “taken advantage of” in trade. Responding to reports of direct talks between the US and Hamas, Trump noted, “We are talking to Hamas. We are helping Israel in these talks. We are not giving cash to Hamas.” Trump emphasized that Hamas should not govern Gaza, stating that all hostages held by Hamas must be released. Trump remarked that relations between the US and Saudi Arabia are excellent, and he will visit Saudi Arabia if the country invests adequately in American companies. Trump articulated, “I told them if they make 1 trillion dollars of purchases from American companies within 4 years, I will go. They agreed to this, so I will go. I have a great relationship with them. They will spend a lot of money on buying military equipment from American companies.” Additionally, President Trump underscored the need for nuclear disarmament, highlighting the presence of a significant number of nuclear weapons in countries such as Russia and China worldwide. Trump expressed his desire to initiate nuclear disarmament talks, stating, “It would be great if we could all rid ourselves of nuclear weapons because the power of nuclear weapons is insane. I would like to start nuclear disarmament discussions.” Trump also commented on the suspension of the law that mandates a ban on TikTok in the US if it is not sold to an American company, extending the 75-day period for its enforcement. Noting the high interest in TikTok, Trump stated, “We now have at least another month. There is no need to extend it, but I will probably extend it if necessary.” Trump mentioned that China plays a role in the TikTok issue and expressed hope for its approval of a potential agreement. According to the law that mandates TikTok’s ban in the US if not sold to an American company, the app was blocked for use in the country on January 19th, later to be available again on the same day. On his first day in office, President Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending the enforcement of this law for 75 days.
