Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov: Ships in Need of Security in Black Sea

During an interview with Russian state television, Foreign Minister Lavrov emphasized the necessity of clear guarantees regarding the safety of navigation for ships in the Black Sea. Lavrov stated, “We are in favor of restarting the Black Sea initiative in a more acceptable way for everyone.” He evaluated the negotiations held yesterday between Russian and American experts in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh. Lavrov pointed out that the results of the negotiations were communicated to the Presidents of Russia and the United States. The initiative for the safety of navigation for ships in the Black Sea was discussed during the negotiations. He highlighted the need to eliminate uncertainties in this regard, saying, “Our position is very simple: We cannot trust this person’s (Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy) words. We want predictability in the grain and fertilizer markets, and we do not want anyone to try to push us away from this market.” Lavrov indicated that Africa and other regions are suffering in terms of food due to the West’s games and underscored the need for clear guarantees. Lavrov mentioned that the guarantees would be provided only if Washington gives orders to Zelenskiy and his team. He expressed optimism regarding Washington being able to obtain positive results in stopping terrorist attacks aimed at civil and energy infrastructures not related to the military industry. Lavrov referred to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s attempts to revive the Black Sea Grain Corridor Agreement several times and shared an account where Erdogan expressed a desire to agree in the last minute on refraining from attacks on Ukraine’s nuclear infrastructure. Lavrov explained that they consented to this, but later Erdogan informed President Vladimir Putin that Zelenskiy had backtracked from this proposal. Lavrov criticized Europe’s approach to the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, claiming that the countries are trying to obstruct Russia by following in the footsteps of Napoleon Bonaparte and Adolf Hitler. He likened Europe’s mobilization against Russia to the journeys of Napoleon and Hitler when they seized control of Europe to achieve their goals. Lavrov also pointed out that European countries are supporting Ukraine with arms shipments and discussing the deployment of peace forces to Ukrainian territories. Lavrov accused French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer of being idealistic and ineffective politicians and mentioned that Europeans oppose the US administration’s approach to the Ukrainian issue led by former President Donald Trump.
