Sales Decline, Prices Drop: Kilograms for 100 Lira

In Sinop, one of Turkey’s major fishing cities, fish prices have dropped with the arrival of Ramadan. Different types of fish are on display at the markets before the fishing season ends on April 15th. Fishermen who venture out to sea in the city are catching plenty of species like whiting, horse mackerel, and mullet, selling them for 100 lira per kilogram. While the price for a kilogram of anchovy has found buyers at 150 lira in the city, Turkish salmon raised in cages is being sold for 200 lira per kilogram. Fisherman Ibrahim Coşkun told AA news agency that fish sales have decreased by 80% since the beginning of Ramadan. Coşkun explained that people are not keen on consuming fish during Ramadan, leading to a decrease in sales and prices. He stated, “Whiting, horse mackerel are at 100 lira per kilogram, and salmon is at 200 lira. Our prices are very good. There has been a decrease of more than half in prices. Why? Because fish is a product that needs to be sold daily. That’s why we cut the prices in half.” Fisherman Ibrahim Gündoğdu also noted a decline in fish sales during Ramadan, mentioning that fish like whiting and horse mackerel were sold for 150 lira per kilogram before Ramadan, but they reduced the prices to 100 lira. While anchovies were previously sold for 200 lira, they are now priced at 150 lira, but there seems to be little interest. Gündoğdu added, “Our sales have decreased significantly.”
