Schools in Santorini and 3 Greek Islands to Remain Closed Until February 14

Schools on Santorini, Ios, Anafi, and Amorgos will remain closed at least until February 14 due to ongoing earthquakes. Authorities have warned residents on the islands to avoid holding large gatherings inside buildings and approaching abandoned structures.

As tremors continue to rattle the Greek islands, the Seismic Risk Assessment Scientific Committee has decided to keep schools in Santorini, Ios, Anafi, and Amorgos closed until at least February 14.

In a statement, it was mentioned that “the seismic alignment in the sea area between Anydros, Thera, and Amorgos remains stable,” while stating that “it is not related to the volcanic activity of Kameni or the submarine volcano of Kolumbos.” This morning, earthquakes above 4.5 Richter were recorded in the sea area between Santorini and Amorgos within about 50 minutes. Officials have advised island residents to refrain from holding large gatherings inside buildings and approaching abandoned structures. Entering the ports of Ammoudi, Armeni, Korfos, and Old Fira was also deemed dangerous. Residents were asked to continue removing hazardous items from their buildings (such as hanging heavy objects, suspended ceilings, etc.) and emptying swimming pools. They were also advised to choose safe routes, especially in areas with steep slopes where landslides could occur, when moving on urban and rural road networks. It was reported that urgent evacuations will be provided from coastal areas in case of strong seismic shocks.
