Scientists discover mysterious new life forms in the depths of the soil

Researchers from Michigan State University have announced the discovery of a previously unknown microbial family in the vital soil layers crucial for life on Earth. This new microbial family found in the Earth’s “critical zone” could have groundbreaking potential for water purification and environmental sustainability.

Led by Microbiology Expert Prof. James Tiedje, the team encountered a new microbial branch named ‘CSP1-3’ in these deep soil layers. These microorganisms were isolated from deep soil samples in Iowa, USA, and China.

The researchers revealed that the ancestors of the CSP1-3 family lived millions of years ago in hot springs and freshwater before adapting to surface soil and then deep soil layers. DNA analysis showed that these microbes are actively growing rather than remaining dormant.

Tiedje’s team is attempting to culture these microbes by recreating the temperature conditions of their origin in hot springs. If successful, genetic characteristics related to biotechnological applications such as the ability to break down pollutants will also be investigated.

Prof. Tiedje emphasized the significance of this new discovery, stating, “There is still much we do not know about these microorganisms. However, if we can uncover this information, we can develop effective solutions for the environmental challenges our world faces.”
