Scientists’ New Suggestion against Hypertension: Bananas and Broccoli

According to a recent study, increasing potassium intake found in foods like bananas and broccoli may be more effective in reducing high blood pressure than just reducing salt consumption.

A new study conducted at the University of Waterloo in Canada revealed that increasing the ratio of potassium to sodium in the diet may be more effective in reducing high blood pressure compared to just reducing sodium (salt) intake. The research team emphasized that potassium-rich foods such as bananas and broccoli could positively impact blood pressure. HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, A GLOBAL ISSUE

High blood pressure, affecting more than 30% of the adult population worldwide, is a major cause of serious health problems like heart disease and stroke. It can also pave the way for conditions such as kidney failure, heart rhythm disorders, and dementia. “REDUCING SALT IS NOT ENOUGH”

Professor Anita Layton, specializing in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Pharmacy, and Biology, stated, “When we have high blood pressure, we are usually advised to consume less salt. However, our research shows that adding potassium-rich foods to the diet may be more effective.” AN EVOLUTIONARY APPROACH: OLD DIETS, NEW ISSUES

Lead author of the study, Melissa Stadt, suggested, “Early humans consumed plenty of fruits and vegetables. Therefore, our bodies may have evolved to function according to a high potassium and low sodium ratio.” According to Stadt, modern Western diets often contain high sodium and low potassium, which may explain why high blood pressure is more common in industrialized societies. MEN ARE AT HIGHER RISK BUT CAN BENEFIT MORE

A study utilizing mathematical models indicated that gender also plays a role in this interaction. The findings suggest that men are more prone to high blood pressure, but when the potassium/sodium ratio is increased, they can benefit more from this change compared to women.

Researchers highlight that through such mathematical models, the effects of different factors on the human body can be examined rapidly, economically, and ethically.
