Severe Winter Takes a Toll on Greenhouses: Decreased Yield, Increased Prices!

The extreme cold weather in Antalya over the past week has slowed down the ripening of crops in greenhouses, leading to increased prices. The lowest price for tomatoes, which was 15 TL on February 14th, has doubled. Greenhouses in Mersin and Hatay have also suffered significant damage. The Mediterranean region has been under the influence of cold weather for the past week. Farmers in Antalya have been taking shifts to protect their crops in the greenhouses from damage. However, even the stoves they lit at night were not enough to shield their crops from frost. The slowed ripening of crops has led to a decrease in the harvest quantity, causing a shortage in crop supply and subsequently increasing prices. In Antalya, the lowest price for tomatoes, which was 15 TL on February 14th, has increased by 100%, reaching 30 TL. The cultivated areas in Mersin were also affected by frost. Almost all flowering trees and around 30% of the crops in greenhouses were damaged. Under the leadership of Mersin Governor Atilla Toros, an “Agricultural Products Crisis Desk” has been established, and damage assessment work is ongoing in the city. In Hatay, temperatures have dropped below freezing at night over the past week. In the Defne district, many crops, including the kapyabiber grown in greenhouses for export, have been damaged. The teams from the Defne Agriculture and Forestry Directorate conducted a preliminary inspection and damage assessment in Toygarlı Mahallesi, where the damage was significant.
