Singer Katy Perry Declines Request to Sing in Space

American singer Katy Perry, along with other famous personalities, traveled to space with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ rocket company. The journey, named NS-31, lasted 10 minutes with the New Shepard rocket departing from Texas. After returning to Earth, Katy Perry kissed the ground. Known for songs like “California Gurls,” “Dark Horse,” and “Roar,” the renowned singer Katy Perry embarked on the space journey.

The aviation and space company Blue Origin, owned by Amazon’s founder Jeff Bezos, planned the journey with participants such as Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyễn, Gayle King, Kerianne Flynn, and Lauren Sánchez. The journey with the New Shepard rocket lasted 10 minutes. The capsule carrying 6 female crew members separated from the space vehicle 2 minutes and 40 seconds after the launch. About 1 minute later, the capsule crossed the Karman Line, entering space.

During this time, the 6 crew members who earned the title of astronauts experienced microgravity, or weightlessness, for about 4 minutes. The space vehicle flew in emptiness for about 4 minutes before returning to Earth. It is known that the crew briefly detached from their seats and freely moved in a weightless environment. After a 10-minute flight, singer Katy Perry’s first act was to kiss the ground. The Karman Line, located 100 kilometers above sea level, is considered the boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and space.

Those who cross this boundary are considered astronauts. The New Shepard rocket, traveling about 100 kilometers into the sky and beyond the internationally recognized space boundary called the Karman Line, reached a speed exceeding three times the speed of sound.

Blue Origin company has been conducting paid 10-minute flights in the field of space tourism since 2021. for the first time in more than 60 years, a crew consisting only of women took part in a space mission.

Finally, in 1963, Russian astronaut Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman to travel to space. The crew of 6 women who made history with this flight underwent extensive preparations.

It was revealed that famous personalities took astronaut training in communications by Blue Origin. American singer Katy Perry, who also made statements to the AP, said, “I tell myself every day, ‘You’re brave, you’re courageous, you’re doing this to inspire a very different person for the next generation, especially young girls.'” Perry, who shared her training on her social media account, mentioned the education she was receiving about space.

“Plenty of things to digest in space training. We almost finished the day and they showed us the capsule, and we are simulating in another capsule. The name of the capsule is Tortoise,” said Perry, who had previously stated, “If you told me I would be a part of the first all-female space crew, I would believe you… There was nothing my childhood imagination couldn’t reach.” King announced that Perry sang the song “What a Wonderful World.”

Perry noted that she had sung this song before and said, “It was my inner self that guided me. I never thought I would sing this song in space one day.” Her teammates suggested she sing one of her own songs like Roar or Firework, but Perry declined.

Saying “This moment is not about me,” Perry emphasized that she saw the space experience as an inspiration for women: “It’s about opening up space for future women and appreciating this wonderful world we see out there. Everything is for the good of the Earth.”
