Stars Communicate: Ages Determined through Vibrations

Australian scientists have announced that they can determine the ages and internal structures of stars by analyzing their vibrations. The research is considered one of the most comprehensive studies on stellar evolution. Researchers from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia revealed that stars vibrate like musical instruments and these vibrations provide important clues about the age, mass, and evolutionary state of stars. The study, conducted using data obtained from NASA’s Kepler K2 mission, examined a cluster of 27 stars known as M67, which is approximately 4 billion years old. This research carries the distinction of being one of the most detailed analyses ever conducted to understand the internal structure of stars. Led by Dr. Claudia Reyes from the UNSW Faculty of Physics, the team read the frequencies emitted by stars as unique ‘fingerprints’ to determine the internal structure, temperature, and age of each star. Reyes noted that stars emit various frequencies like different notes, and these frequencies provide information about the age of the star. Professor Dennis Stello from UNSW mentioned that thanks to this discovery, it will be possible to develop more accurate models of the internal structure of stars. Dr. Reyes, the lead researcher, expressed that discovering these unique signatures in the frequencies was an unexpected outcome, stating, “Now we can revisit past collected star data and search for these signatures. So essentially, we will continue listening to the stars.”
