Strike in Greece: Call for Government Action Against High Cost of Living

In Greece, workers and civil servants went on a 24-hour strike demanding action from the Mitsotakis government to address the high cost of living. The Workers’ Confederation (GSEE) and the Civil Servants Confederation (ADEDY) called for a one-day strike. The strike was supported by the PAME workers’ union, affiliated with the Communist Party of Greece (KKE). As a result of the strike, public transportation was disrupted in many cities, including the capital, Athens. Railway and maritime transportation came to a complete stop, with train services canceled and ships remaining docked in ports. Flights were canceled at airports. In Athens, a protest was held as part of the strike. Thousands of workers and civil servants gathered in Athens and marched to the parliament building, voicing their demands for the government to address the high cost of living and increase wages. Retirees also called for the reinstatement of the 13th and 14th pension payments, which were canceled during the economic crisis that began in 2009. Palestinian flags were present in the protest in solidarity with Palestine against Israeli attacks. Similar protests took place in various cities across the country, including Thessaloniki.
