Striking Survey in Israel: Public Says “Civil War Could Break Out”

Results of a survey conducted in Israel revealed that 60% of the population believes there is a real risk of a civil war breaking out in the country. Amid ongoing attacks by the Israeli army on the occupied Palestinian territories, Lebanon, and Syria, a new public opinion poll in Israel showed that 60% of participants think a civil war could occur. According to The Jerusalem Post news site, the survey called “Israel Social Index,” conducted by the Jewish People Policy Institute (JPPI), demonstrated that 60% of the population in Israel considers the outbreak of a civil war as a real danger. In the survey published on Thursday, April 3, participants were asked about former President of the Israeli Supreme Court Aharon Barak’s statement that “Israel is very close to a civil war.” While 27% agreed with this statement, 33% believed that Barak used an exaggerated expression but still acknowledged the presence of a real risk of civil war. The percentage of those who said such a risk did not exist stood at 16%.

IS THERE A “DEEP STATE” IN ISRAEL? Participants were also asked about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s controversial attempt to dismiss the internal intelligence Shin Bet Chief Ronen Bar, with the High Court intervening. While 51% of participants opposed the court’s intervention, 38% said Bar’s dismissal should be revoked by the High Court. In response to a question about the “deep state,” participants shared their opinions. According to the results, two-fifths of the participants believe Netanyahu, who claims there is a “deep state” in the country, is “mistaken”; one-fifth thinks he is “exaggerating.” Among far-right participants, 79% agree with the expression of a “deep state,” while the percentage of those who believe Netanyahu is mistaken is 78% among leftists, 76% among center-left voters, and 61% among participants in the political center.
