Tariff Quota of 5% on Corn Imports

The Ministry of Trade has opened a tariff quota of 5% on imports until June 30th, valid for a maximum of 1 million tons to prevent supply security and price increase risks for corn production.
The decision for the implementation of the “Decision on Application of Tariff Quota on Corn Imports” was published in the Official Gazette by the signature of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
In a written statement made by the Ministry of Trade regarding the issue, it was stated that “Our Ministry of Trade evaluates the well-being of both producers and consumers by guiding the markets correctly to prevent speculative prices, ensure supply security in essential food products, and meet the country’s needs through the promotion of domestic production. Using all the instruments of trade policies in coordination with relevant institutions, primarily the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Ministry is taking necessary measures. It was emphasized in the statement that a tariff quota of 5% was opened until June 30, 2025, to ensure supply security and price stability for corn, which is an important production input for meat, as well as for other food products, where domestic corn production is insufficient to meet consumption.”
“It will be possible to import a maximum of 8,000 tons at a time,” the statement said, adding that after July 1, the tariff on corn imports will be reapplied at 130%. The statement also mentioned that “The importation practice with low customs duties for a limited amount of product, considering the need to protect the domestic producers and the harvest period of the product, will be terminated as of July 1, 2025, and the customs duty in corn imports will be reapplied at its original level of 130%. In order to ensure fair utilization of the tariff quota scope, a maximum of 8,000 tons of import can be made by a user at once, and there must be a 7-day wait for subsequent imports.”
