The Health Cost of Artificial Intelligence Amounts to 5.4 Billion Dollars

The vast pollution and health impacts of artificial intelligence have raised concerns. In a study, it was calculated that massive investments led to a health cost of 5.4 billion dollars. Artificial intelligence technologies are rapidly advancing, with big companies making investments worth billions of dollars. However, the effects of these investments on air pollution and human health are also worrisome. It has been revealed that the artificial intelligence investments of companies like Google, Microsoft, and Meta have resulted in huge health costs. A new study by UC Riverside and Caltech found that pollution from Big Tech’s data centers cost the US public health system an estimated 5.4 billion dollars over the past five years. It was noted that these data centers require a large amount of electricity, which is mostly generated from fossil fuels. Researchers stated that the increase in air pollution resulting from high energy consumption has led to a rise in cases of cancer, asthma, and other diseases. In 2023, pollution from data centers was estimated to increase health costs by 20% compared to the previous year, reaching 1.5 billion dollars. Between 2019 and 2023, Google was estimated to be responsible for the highest health cost of 2.6 billion dollars, followed by Microsoft with 1.6 billion dollars and Meta with 1.2 billion dollars. Google, Microsoft, and Meta have criticized the research for exaggerating pollution levels and expressed their reactions to the results. It is expected that Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta will spend over 300 billion dollars on artificial intelligence this year.
