Scientists have discovered hidden patterns in the works of famous painters like Leonardo da Vinci and Piet Mondrian that contain mathematical secrets of nature. A recent study revealed that the tree branches depicted by artists follow the fractal mathematical model found in nature.

Researchers have found hidden mathematical ratios reflecting branching patterns in nature in the works of renowned painters such as Leonardo da Vinci and Piet Mondrian.

Published in the peer-reviewed journal PNAS Nexus, the study examined the depictions of trees in paintings and determined that the thickness of branches adhered to specific mathematical ratios. Experts believe that even abstract paintings can sometimes unknowingly mimic realistic natural forms. In his observations in the 16th century, Leonardo da Vinci had claimed that the relationship between the diameters of branches was based on certain mathematical rules. The “α” parameter used by Da Vinci was confirmed in the works of art examined by scientists, with ratios ranging from 1.5 to 2.8. HIDDEN MATHEMATICS IN GRAY TREE PAINTING

The research team also noted similar mathematical ratios in the cubist work “Gray Tree” by 20th century artist Piet Mondrian dating back to 1912. The study reveals that maintaining specific mathematical values enables even abstract art to subconsciously evoke natural forms. Analyses of artworks from different periods and cultures show that the mathematics in tree depictions is an aesthetic element independent of time and space. The researchers emphasize the intertwining of art and science by stating, “This study demonstrates how art offers a way to appreciate and recreate the beauty of nature.”
