TikTok Blocked in Albania

The Chinese-based social media platform TikTok is officially being blocked in Albania. The implementation of this ban is requested starting today.

The Albanian government had decided to temporarily ban TikTok nationwide for a year starting from November 2024, causing debates.

Following this decision, the National Cyber Security Agency (AKSK) requested the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority of Albania (AKEP) to take measures to block access to TikTok. The AKSK demanded that this ban be enforced as of today. WHAT HAPPENED? In Fan Noli Elementary School in the capital Tirana, 14-year-old student Martin Cani lost his life in a stabbing attack by another student on November 18, 2024. It was claimed that the argument among students had started on social media. Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama stated after the incident that they would ban TikTok in the country for a year and that this ban would take effect in 2025. It was announced that the decision to ban TikTok for a year had been approved after last week’s Cabinet meeting.
